“Located above the Asheville skyline in Reynolds Mountain, this home offers stunning views of downtown and the nearby mountains. The homeowners dreamed of a peaceful retreat that would serve as a gathering place that embraces the beauty of the WNC mountains. Working closely with the owners and the project team to bring this spectacular home to life, it is now a cozy retreat for the owners to enjoy nature and family time.
The owners were originally drawn to the property because of the views of downtown Asheville, so capturing those views was a priority. Surrounded by both neighbors and views, we needed to find the balance between privacy and openness. The low profile design minimizes visual impact within the viewshed. Layers of mountain ranges extend beyond this neighborhood, and we wanted this home to be a background actor, not the main character.
The house’s horizontal design prioritizes the raised central gable as a kind of pavilion for the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. This interconnected volume allowed us to bring in natural light and ventilation from all sides. The glass end of the gable, slightly tilted toward the approach, acts as a welcoming lantern when illuminated at night.”
