That’s a big question — and a nuanced one. The cost of a custom home has less to do with who is building it, and more to do with what is being built: the design, the level of detail and finish, and the nature of the property it’s going on. In the Asheville area, we typically see custom home costs starting around $550 per square foot. For homes that call for a high level of craftsmanship, unique materials, or bold architectural detail, costs can rise accordingly. There’s no fixed upper limit — it really depends on what you’re building. Most of the homes we build — unique, well-crafted, and deeply personal — tend to fall between $650 and $1,200 per square foot. It depends. Most custom homes in Asheville take between 12 and 24 months from groundbreaking to move-in. But the full timeline — from initial vision to completed home — can range from 18 months to 3+ years, depending on a few key factors:

  • The complexity of the design
  • The amount of site development needed
  • How quickly decisions are made throughout the design and build process.
  • The more aligned and proactive the team is — design, build, and ownership — the smoother and faster things tend to move.

It’s true that we stay busy — but not because we say yes to every project. Quite the opposite. We take the builder–homeowner relationship seriously, and only take on projects that feel like a strong fit for our team, our values, and the kind of work we do best. Most of our clients engage us early in their process. That gives us time to help evaluate potential home sites, assemble a design team, and make sure the project is aligned with budget expectations. When we’re brought in early, it’s much more likely that we’ll be able to begin construction shortly after plans are finalized. That said, we do keep a spot or two open each year for exciting, fully designed projects that come to us ready to build.
